A Discovery of Witches
by Deborah E. Harkness
Since it seems that we at The Daily Basics (and just about everyone else out there) are major suckers for any book that has the word witch, vampire or werewolf in it, it stands to reason that we are all over A Discovery of Witches.
Besides, ya gotta love an author that does a You tube video called, How to Serve Wine to a Vampire. She offers hints like, spare the cost, or buy local, because Vampires are the original locavores. She even gives wine suggestions to serve your vampire such as a nice River of Skulls Mourvedre.
So, what is the book about?
In a nutshell, our heroine, Dana Bishop, is a scholar of 17th century chemistry (intriguing), a descendant from a line of very accomplished witches (love that!) but she’s denied her witchly powers all her life until . . . She opens a bewitched manuscript at Oxford’s Bodleian Library and what could possibly happen but the inevitable? Vampires, witches and daemons are all over her like a wet suit. Of course there is a love interest. Guesses? A 1500 year old Vampire named Matthew, who luckily is a good guy and, by the way, has a drop dead gorgeous wardrobe to kill… literally.
Harkness has the ability to weave rich history, mesh it with the supernatural, throw in great, witty and fast paced writing and make you happy at the end. Oh, and this is the first planned book of a trilogy. Yesssssssssssssssssss.
Go get this book.

Well, seeing that I have an interest in all four (history, witches, vampires and a great plot, ) I might have to go pick this book up! thanks for recommendation!
Another great book to put to my ever growing list of books to read. This seems particularly good!
We have a ‘coven’ of friends called the Witches of Wye (WOW) who get together once a month — basically an excuse to eat and drink and howl – so you know I’m interested. Saw the book reviews in a few mags this month and they have all been favorable…
